Right after Gibson bought Epiphone in '57, the company redesigned those '40s flattops to incorporate some of the design elements of the Gibson J-45, like a sloped shoulder and a shorter scale length, giving birth to what they eventually renamed the Texan. This maple-bodied, spruce-topped dreadnought was made famous by none other than Paul McCartney, and can be heard on the recording of "Yesterday." The Texan has also been used by the likes of Kurt Cobain, Ben Gibbard, Noel Gallagher, and Peter Frampton.
